Drug NameLozol (Indapamide) Drug UsesLozol is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It also is used to eliminate fluid when the body accumulates excess fluid, such as with edema and congestive heart failure. How to useLozol is taken as a single daily dose, generally in the morning before breakfast. It can be taken with or without food. Antacids have no effect on the activity of Lozol. Drug Class and MechanismLozol is a diuretic (water pill) that is primarily used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It works by preventing the kidney from reabsorbing (retaining in the body) salt and water that is destined to be eliminated in the urine. This results in increased urine output (diuresis). Lozol also is thought to reduce the salt in the smooth muscle of the walls of blood vessels. (The salt ultimately is eliminated in the urine.) The loss of salt from the muscle causes the muscle to relax, and the relaxation of the vessels results in reduced blood pressure. Missed DoseIf you miss a dose of Propecia and you are using it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to you regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. Storage Lozol should be stored between 15 degrees C (59 degrees F) and 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Possible Side EffectsDehydration may occur during lozol therapy. Hypokalemia (low blood potassium due to elimination of potassium in the urine) is one of the most common adverse effects associated with the thiazide class of diuretics and may cause abnormal cardiac rhythms. The most common symptom associated with hypokalemia is muscle weakness. Patients receiving lozol may need potassium supplements to prevent hypokalemia. Hypomagnesemia (low blood magnesium) also may occur. Other possible side effects include excessive loss of sodium (particularly of concern in elderly patients), increased cholesterol (this effect tends to diminish with continued use), increased uric acid concentrations in the blood, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, blurred vision, tingling of the extremities, nervousness, impotence, rash, photosensitivity (skin rashes due to sunlight), fatigue, irritability, and agitation. Warnings/PrecautionsIf you have had a severe allergic reaction to this medicine or to any other sulfonamide medicine (such as Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin, glyburide, or probenecid), contact your doctor before taking this medicine. A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine or if a certain medicine is a sulfonamide, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor may have also prescribed a potassium supplement for you. If so, follow the dosing carefully. Do not start taking additional potassium on your own or change your diet to include more potassium without first checking with your doctor. This medicine may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. For women: it is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine.
What is Lozol (indapamide)?
Indapamide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention.
Indapamide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Indapamide may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What is the most important information I should know about Lozol (indapamide)?
Do not use this medication if you have severe kidney disease or are unable to urinate, if you have severe liver disease, or if you have low potassium levels in your blood (hypokalemia).
Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, gout, lupus, diabetes, or an allergy to sulfa drugs.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel fine. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.

It is not known whether indapamide passes into breast milk or if it could cause harm to a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I take Lozol (indapamide)?
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.
Your blood and urine may both be tested if you have been vomiting or are dehydrated.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel fine. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
Store the tablets at room temperature away from heat, light, and moisture.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
Overdose symptoms of a indapamide overdose may include nausea, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, thirst, and muscle pain or weakness.

Lozol (indapamide) side effects

Less serious side effects may include:

What other drugs will affect Lozol (indapamide)?
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:

steroids (prednisone and others);

insulin or diabetes medicine taken by mouth;

salicylates such as aspirin, Disalcid, Doan's Pills, Dolobid, Salflex, Tricosal, and others;

an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), ramipril (Altace), and others;
-
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), diclofenac (Voltaren), indomethacin, naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), piroxicam (Feldene), and others; or
-
amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), bepridil (Vascor), chloroquine (Arelan), cisapride (Propulsid), clarithromycin (Biaxin), disopyramide (Norpace), dofetilide (Tikosyn), droperidol (Inapsine), erythromycin (Erythrocin, E.E.S), haloperidol (Haldol), pentamidine (NebuPent, Pentam), pimozide (Orap), procainamide (Procan), quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinaglute), sotalol (Betapace), sparfloxacin (Zagam), or thioridazine (Mellaril).
