ACE inhibitors such as Altace lower blood pressure by reducing the production of angiotensin II, thereby, relaxing the arterial muscles and enlarging the arteries. Missed DoseIf you miss a dose of Sumycin , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. Storage Store capsules at room temperature between 15-30C (59-86F). Possible Side EffectsAltace generally is well tolerated, and side effects are usually mild and transient.
A dry, persistent cough has been reported with the use of Altace and other ACE inhibitors. Coughing resolves after discontinuing the drug.
Other side effects include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, rash, dizziness, fatigue, headache, loss of taste, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fainting and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
Altace and other ACE inhibitors also may cause kidney failure and increased levels of potassium in the blood. The most serious but, fortunately, very rare side effects are liver failure and angioedema (swelling of lips and throat that can obstruct breathing). Do not exceed the recommended dose without checking with your doctor. It may take several weeks for this medicine to work.
Laboratory and/or medical tests including liver function, kidney function, blood pressure, blood counts, and blood electrolytes may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects.
Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine.
Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. If dizziness occurs, sit up or stand slowly.
This medicine may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to this medicine. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period.
Drink plenty of fluids during exercise or other activities where excessive sweating may occur. If you experience difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately.
Do not take any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. This medicine may lower your resistance to infection. Prevent infection by avoiding contact with people with colds or other infections.
Do not use a salt substitute or other potassium supplement without checking with your doctor.
Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
For women: use of this medicine during pregnancy has resulted in fetal and newborn death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.
Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine.
If you have diabetes, this medicine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
What is ramipril?

It can further lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects of ramipril. Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking ramipril, unless your doctor has told you to.
Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or kidney failure while you are taking ramipril. Drink plenty of water each day while you are taking this medication.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking ramipril?
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to ramipril or to any other ACE inhibitor, such as benazopril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), or trandolapril (Mavik).
Before using ramipril, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:

kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);

liver disease;

heart disease or congestive heart failure;
-
diabetes; or
-
a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use ramipril, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

How should I take ramipril?
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication.
Take each dose with a full glass of water.
Ramipril can be taken with or without food.

To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood pressure will need to be checked on a regular basis. Your kidney or liver function may also need to be tested. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking ramipril. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel fine. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
Store ramipril at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a ramipril overdose may include feeling extremely dizzy or light-headed, or fainting.
What should I avoid while taking ramipril?
Avoid drinking alcohol. It can further lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects of ramipril. Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking ramipril, unless your doctor has told you to.
Ramipril side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; severe stomach pain; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

feeling light-headed, fainting;
-
urinating more or less than usual, or not at all;
-
fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
-
pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding;
-
tired feeling, muscle weakness, and pounding or uneven heartbeats;
-
chest pain; or
-
swelling, rapid weight gain.
Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur, such as:

cough;
-
dizziness, drowsiness, headache;
-
sleep problems (insomnia);
-
decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;

nausea, vomiting; or
-
mild skin itching or rash.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
What other drugs will affect ramipril?
Before taking ramipril, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:

lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith);
-
a potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con;
-
salt substitutes that contain potassium;
-
aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), diclofenac (Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and others; or
-
a diuretic (water pill).
If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use ramipril or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.
There may be other drugs not listed that can affect ramipril. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
